The tendency to recycle objects in order to make the most of the materials used is an option that not only helps save the planet but also favors creativity and money savings. If you like fish and want an aquarium at home, you can do it from the old box of your GoPro.
Benefits of a fish tank at home
Having an aquarium at home is not only a beneficial pastime for health, but it also helps you get to know and interact with marine flora and fauna. Likewise, it is considered a hobby anti-stress that helps lower the pressure and relax after a long day at work. It is more entertaining to watch an aquarium than to watch TV; In addition, many aquarium enthusiasts create close ties with the fish they care for, so they consider them as pets.
Therefore, if you like fish and have considered the possibility of having a fish tank at home, but you do not have space for it; You have the alternative of a miniature aquarium. In this sense, if you keep the old box of your GoPro, without knowing what to do with it, we present a very creative option to reuse it and give it a value that you did not even imagine: transform it into a small aquarium.
In the case of a very small aquarium with a capacity of only 0.5 liters of water, you could put it as an ornament on your desk, on a shelf or next to your computer; there they can live in optimal conditions, 3 to 5 small fish and some mini crab.
What you need to have and know
To convert the plastic box of your GoPro into a fish tank, it is necessary that you make a transformation, in order to provide the best quality of life to the fish that are going to live there. For this, it is essential that you have special tools and since it is a complex procedure that requires a high level of skill, it is a recommended task for DIY experts and with basic knowledge of electronics.
Among the things you will need to buy we have, a miniature LED light bar (USB type) or failing that a piece of LED tape, a small capacity water purifier, a small size CO2 capsule, a food container tested of leaks (with dimensions similar to that of the GoPro box), black self-adhesive paper, small magnets and a thin sheet (which will serve as the basis for the aquarium).
Do it yourself
1-Prepare the box
The first thing you should do is clean the GoPro box, in order to remove dirt and glue residue, characteristic of the manufacturer’s identification tags.
2-Adapt the lighting system
Next, you should adapt the LED lamp according to the size of the box and as a support of the light system that you have adapted, you can help yourself with the handle of a simple disposable shaver. To do this, you must discard its leaflet and adjust it with the help of small cuts and screws, both at the base of the led bar, and the box that will work as an aquarium. Once the LED light is fixed to its base, do not forget to solder the cables that will power the lighting system later.
3-Place a background and stabilize the LED light
Then, proceed to measure and cut the background paper (decorative) of your choice, in this case, a dark tone that will give an elegant touch. Attach small magnets to both the mobile base of the light system, and the back of the aquarium box to ensure a better grip.
4-Provides a CO2 system
An important factor to take into account is the contribution of carbon dioxide to plants, required in their photosynthetic process; thanks to which the oxygen important for the stability of the ecosystem you are creating is released. To do this, you can rely on a CO2 capsule and create a system using some elements, such as a regulator coupling, a piece of hose and the base of an injection needle; to which you must attach by cutting and sanding a piece of porous wood and incorporate into a microtube of the ideal length that allows adapting to the size of the box.
5-Condition the water filter
With respect to the filtration system, you can use a conventional small capacity filter; which you must adapt to the size of the aquarium, using the food container as support. Then proceed to disassemble the filter motor and cut the cover plastic, to size according to the tank. Then, cut the synthetic fiber to the size of the filter and reserve for the moment of assembly.
6-Verify its operation
With the help of a drill, it proceeds to make the water inlet and outlet points of the new filtration system. Next, fix the motor, the motor and the internal parts using silicone, add fibers, separators of the filtering gravels, the carbon and close the unit (container) tightly. Check its operation, bypassing water through the system.
7- Build a base for the aquarium
Once the adaptation of the water filter is finished, proceed to develop a base or stand; which, in addition to harmonizing aesthetically with the aquarium, will allow you to protect the filtration system and the CO2 system. To do this, use a thin sheet that easily conforms to your requirements. Measure, cut, paste and incorporate accessories that give you a better finish.
8-Assemble the systems (bubble and filtration)
Conveniently locate the container with the systems inside the base you just built and fixing them with the help of magnets; in the same way, mark the points where the cables and connection hoses will pass and proceed to drill with the help of the necessary tools. Make the assembly, install and you have the whole set ready.
9-Add the seabed and prepare the water
Finally, select the gravel, stones and natural plant material of your liking to recreate the marine environment, which you must wash and condition properly before introducing them to the pond.
10-Incorporate the fish
Once assembled the aquarium and treated the water, you can introduce the small specimens to your new home. The end result will be one of the best miniature aquariums you can have at home and without taking up much space.
